New Five Star Book Review on Readers’ Favorite

2014-10-09 15.34.28

Thank you to Chris Fischer, from Readers’ Favorite, for his Five Star review of To the Gallows.

“An African-American cowboy and U.S. Marshal in Indian territory, Cole Winter accepts a commission to bring in Joseph Two Guns, his own brother. So begins the story in To the Gallows by author G.S. Luckett. Cole knows that Joseph is not guilty of the crime he is accused of, and the only way he knows he can protect the gunslinger is to bring Joseph in himself. When he saves Joseph from a mob of vigilantes, he also rescues Jessie, a woman also wrongly accused. A short book that’s full of action from start to finish, To the Gallows is a true Western adventure in the style of some of the old Western masters, and one that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

I truly enjoyed reading G.S. Luckett’s new book. I am a huge fan of Westerns, and enjoyed how this book strongly delved into the history of issues of race in the Old West. Luckett’s writing style is fast paced, exciting and keeps you turning the pages from the start. To the Gallows would appeal to any reader who enjoys a great Western, any lover of fiction or historical fiction, and anyone looking to enjoy a quick but excellent read. I have not read any of G.S. Luckett’s work before, and I understand that this is his first work in the Western genre, although he has written other highly action focused books. I look forward to reading those, and also to seeing what this promising author has for us in the future.”

To The Gallows (The Legend of Cole Winters Book 1) – G. S. Luckett

Thank you George Johnson for your review.

Not The Baseball Pitcher

25124574The black man’s role in the old west has always fascinated me. It’s received short shrift in history, though western fiction has been a bit more honest in portrayals.

Cole Winters, one of the first African-American lawman of the Old West, is the hero of this book. Raised by Native Americans, Winters was hired by the U.S. Marshals Service to track down and bring back outlaws in the Indian Territories.

Winters, when his gun fighter brother, Joseph Two Guns, late of the Buffalo Bill show, becomes wanted for a crime he did not commit, merely defending himself, Winters does what only he can do. He hunts him down. To save his life.

Course Winters has a price on his head from killing the murderers of his wife and son. She was Joseph Two Guns’ sister. The man he killed was a rich man’s son. He’s being pursued even as he’s…

Charles Ray Review of To the Gallows

Thank you to Charles Ray for his review.

Charles Ray’s Review.  Charles Ray’s Blog

Cole Winter is an African-American cowboy, who also happens to be a U.S. marshal, one of the first of his race in the Indian Territory. Fast with a gun and incorruptible, he accepts a warrant to bring in Joseph Two Guns, who just happens to be his brother-in-law.
Cole finds Joseph and has to break him out of jail ahead of a lynch mob. At the same time, he frees Jessie Wainwright who has falsely been accused of murder. Together, the three must stay one step ahead of corrupt sheriffs, lynch mobs, and Clement Fournier, a bounty hunter who is on Cole’s trail, as Cole tries to get Joseph to safety and rescue Jessie’s sister, Kaye..
To the Gallows by G. S. Luckett is the legend of Cole Winters, a fictional tale of an African-American lawman in the American West. Filled with gun and knife fights, and plenty of fisticuffs, Gallows is loosely – very loosely – based on a real-life lawman, Bass Reeves. Unlike the real thing, Cole Winter is literate and a Civil War veteran. And, unlike Reeves, who used his wits more than his gun, Cole is not at all hesitant to put a bullet into a bad man.
For fans of classic shoot ‘em ups, this is a book that will please. You’ll be kept entertained and thrilled as Cole and Joseph work out some serious family difficulties, and cheer when another evil-doer bites the dust. I would have liked to see Cole’s character more fully developed, but I’m probably alone in that, as most western fans want to see the action, and the author gives plenty of that. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.
